Name: Em
Age: 23
Time zone: PST
Contact: leloupetrange

Do you understand the activity requirements for your particular character? Oh DO I.

[OOC] - About the character

Basics

• Name: Rufus Murdoch Scrimgeour
• Birthdate: 29 July, 1936
• Citizenship: Scotland
• Current residence: Grindylow Gardens, Diagon Alley, London, England
• Blood status: Fullblood; but pure Scottish!

Physical

• Height/weight: nearly six foot / middling
• Hair/eyes: tawny/amber
• Manner of speech: At best, friendly and informal; at worst, impatient and dictatorial. His accent is a dilute Renfrewshire
• Manner of dress: Comfortably well-dressed, if haphazard. Though Rufus is rarely out of his sweaters and ties, he does tend to sleep at the office, giving him a rumpled appearance.
• Physical description: At around six feet, Rufus is taller than most without being completely overpowering. He's deceptively built, and always has been - most people in school were surprised to see him on the Quidditch team as a beater - for his average-looking frame is powerful and well-kept. He's been working as an auror for about twenty-five years now, and he's already acquired a collection of scars - most about his arms and neck. Several scars about his eyes have only been deepened with the onset of wrinkles - a great deal of activity and exposure to the elements has not kept him babyfaced. He is rather plain - an amalgam of browns from his hair to his skin to his eyes (though the former tends to orangish and the latter to yellowish) - but his glance is bright and his movements strangely feline for a man his height. He's flexible and quick - things that served him well on the quidditch field and the battle field.
• First impression: Friendly, charismatic

• PB: Robert Redford

Personal

• General personality: In the days before the height of the war - before good friends were lost and tyrants had grown into forces to be reckoned with - Rufus Scrimgeour, one of the most loyal workers the ministry has ever seen, was light in spirit and friendly in manner. He was unjaded by the difficulties of leadership and enjoyed his position as a hardworking servant of righteousness. The past few years have changed all that, and he has grown harder, less flexible, and more ruthless. His loyalty to the ministry had struck that tenuous existence between passion and fanaticism, and though he can still be caught in those light and humorous moments, it is clear the war has worn on him.

At best, Rufus might be described as a good, hardworking (though rather messily desked) sort of chap - a man of old class and sharp sensibilities who prefers quick, smart action over an abundance of bureaucratic nonsense. At worst, he might be called a caustic old twit - and perhaps also accurately. In truth, Rufus is the sort of person who has patience for children and secretaries but none for those beneath him who do not live up to his exacting standards. He is efficient and diligent and only slightly mellowed by a dry humor. He is also forty two, which makes him old enough to enjoy acting the part of the weary old salt but not old enough to be the most wrinkled in the office. The true crucible of personality is upon the battlefield, however, and it is there that Rufus Scrimgeour shines. In the office he is usually little more than a bemused and heckled voice, chiming into the sort of nonsense that goes on in high stress work places. In the field, however, he is intense, driven, and utterly ruthless in his determination to get the job done.

Though it wouldn't be entirely apt to call Rufus obsessive, he is certainly tenacious; his home has seen far less wear and tear than his desk at work. He eats, breathes (and often sleeps) the ministry; he decided long ago that the ministry was the seat of justice and rightness in the world, and any insinuation otherwise is akin to heresy. The ministry is where his loyalty lies, and he believes that any other good person in wizarding society should have the same set of ideals. His greatest hatred is death eaters, for they represent the antithesis to order and justice. His work desk aside, order is the single greatest virtue to this man, even at the sacrifice of freedom or rights, which (he believes) contribute nothing to safety and moral correctness. Rufus will very quickly turn cold should someone suggest that these beliefs are erroneous in any way; it is probably for this reason that most of his friends are colleagues.

• Strengths and weaknesses: Rufus is passionate about justice and righteousness, and he has dedicated his life to the betterment of society. He would consider his ethics and incorruptibility a strength, though his inflexibility might make others see it otherwise. He is a man of action, and he is respectful of the dangers he faces as an auror. Though this doesn't make him particularly cautious, his actions are not careless. Quick, decisive, efficient action is his ultimate ideal. With very few exceptions, Rufus is difficult to ruffle - he has a good sense of humor and is very easy to get along with (if the person in question agrees with him on politics). Cafeteria food is probably Rufus's greatest weakness; he spends the majority of his time at work and although the food is noxiously bad for him, he eats it nearly every day. Amelia Bones's biscuits would be next in line. As to his personality, one might consider his stubborn inability to deal with change quite the weakness, as well as his propensity for action before thought. He is not particularly prideful, but his ego is that of a Leo - easily bruised and hard pressed to forgive. As a leader, Rufus's main drawback is his rigidity. He respects his officers and their opinions, but when he says something must be done, he will brook no argument. He's also a slob... but he doesn't think this is a weakness.
• Mental health: Excellent

Relationships

• Relatives: Caitrona (mother, b. 1901); Angus (father, b. 1898); 7 sisters (Latharna, Brìghde, Agnes, Bonnie, Maeve, Adie and Ailie) and 2 brothers (Calum, Hamish) - all older; grandparents, great-grandparents, and countless aunts, uncles, cousins, and second-cousins. Scrimgeours live forever.
• Relationship with family: Rufus is the baby of his family and the apple of most of his aunts' and uncles' eyes. He gets along fairly well with most of his cousins, though there's probably more than a few of them he's gotten into brawls with. Rufus's favorite sister is Bonnie.
• Sexuality: Heterosexual
• Significant other: Rufus's work is probably the closest thing to significant other he's ever had.
• Children: None

Educational

• School: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
• Years: 1947 - 1954
• House: Hufflepuff
• Achievements: Beater for the Hufflepuff team
• NEWTS:

  O  Care of Magical Creatures

Occupational

• Occupation: Head of the Auror Office since 1968
• Previous jobs, if any: Rufus has been working for the auror office since he graduated Hogwarts (first as a trainee, then as an auror)

The War

• How is your character involved in the war? As the head of the Auror Office, Rufus is responsible for leading and organizing the aurors against dark wizards who threaten the ministry. As of 1978, this most strongly involves investigating and hunting down Lord Voldemort's activities and followers. As the war continues, he will use the increasing powers given to the aurors to undermine the dark wizards and their supporters in any way possible.
• Will your character die during the next year? No.
• If yes, please give some details on how/when you'd like this to occur: N/A

Overall History
Each section should be at least one paragraph

• Family/childhood:

Rufus's mother was quite a woman, and by the time she'd had her tenth child, she had that household well under her control. She was loving but disciplined, and raised her children to know expressly that there was a difference between right and wrong and that if she ever caught them doing anything remotely related to the latter their asses would smart for the better part of the week. None of the siblings could be considered particularly 'unruly,' but it wasn't an uncommon sight for Hamish or Rufus to be caught wrestling (or punching) their cousins out the back of the house. Their father encouraged the boyish romps (until his wife showed up and hauled the boys off by their ears).

The Scrimgeour clan is surprisingly wealthy, given its size, but that is because Scrimgeour money is old money. Very old money. Mostly because no one is willing to spend it. It would be unfair to call Angus Scrimgeour miserly, but he raised his children with a firm appreciation of the coin. They were raised to be resourceful, practical, and hard workers. As soon as Rufus could hold a broom, he was set to work in the house (no house elves, no magic). Hard work was good and right, and Rufus would take that lesson with him for the rest of his life.

As the baby of the household, Rufus also was the most coddled (by his sisters) and roughed up (by his brothers). He took it all in good humor, and by the time he was ready for Hogwarts there was near nothing that could faze him.

• School/work:

Rufus was sorted into Hufflepuff, which was sort of perplexing for a family of mostly-Gryffindors, but ultimately worked out for the best. It was in Hufflepuff that Rufus's determination and ruthless work ethic were fully developed, and it was these qualities that put him into Hufflepuff. The hat considered Slytherin for the young boy, for he certainly had a streak of 'at all costs' to him - but it was not ambition that drove him. His motive was ethics. Rufus is a firm believer in order. He knows chaos is impossible to quash, but he firmly believes it can be maintained, regulated, and that these goals in a civilized society had to be held above all others. Though he came into Hufflepuff with determination, the house also gifted upon him grace and humility. Though Rufus had in him the potential for dispassion, Hufflepuff nurtured the sense of family he brought from home.

While at Hogwarts, Rufus found himself singularly interested in everything. He took as many classes as he could (even those he was awful in), joined several clubs, and played as a beater on the quidditch team (a surprise in itself as he didn't seem to have the build for it). He was as tenacious in his studies as he was with everything else in life, and he seemed to derive a great deal of satisfaction from ripping into new subjects tooth and claw. Even in school he was considered a workaholic. He was the first one up in the morning (an ability for which he had his mother to thank) and the last one into bed. He got in trouble more than once for practicing his lessons on other students (with the best of intentions), for he considered practical magic the most important of all. Despite his voracity for studies, Rufus proved a dismal failure in Astronomy and History (theory just wasn't his strong suit).

It took Rufus five years at Hogwarts to decide what he wanted to do with his life. According to his Head of House, wanting to do "something lawful" wasn't quite specific enough to decide which classes to go on with. Trouble was, Rufus wasn't exactly an ambitious person. He wanted a job and wanted to do it well - and he'd already had enough experience in school to realize that many people couldn't even do that. Eventually, the position of auror was decided on and he took the necessary classes (which happened to be ones he was already doing quite well in). Graduation followed, and Rufus left behind a string of girlfriends and a number of friends for the ministry. He joined the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and worked his way through training and the position of auror, earning a reputation as a dedicated and responsible officer. His loyalty to the ministry and strength of conviction eventually earned him the position of Head of the Auror Office, and he has been presiding over it with the same exacting standards to which he holds himself, though, admittedly, with laxer interpersonal standards.

• Recent history:

With the rise of the war, Rufus has seen less and less of friends and home, and more and more of the office. Though he has not lost his sense of humor, the last year has offered fewer and fewer sources of humor as colleagues have died and society has been threatened. His main work has been to organize his aurors, which is a cause of some frustration since he'd rather spend his time out on the streets searching himself; the journals have improved this desire, since he can stay in closer contact with his team, but there is a lot of office work required from the office head. He and Barty Crouch are of like minds with regard to the war - freedoms have to be sacrificed to some degree to root out the evil of society. He has been a major proponent of increased auror power and has no compunction with using these new powers against would be dark wizards.
